Racism In Canada

RACISM IN CANADA

A Personal Perspective
by Mani Amar

I was walking back from the park with my older brother, on our way home, we noticed one of our new neighbours had a small black dog. I was very happy. I insisted to my parents that my brother take me back to that house so I can give the dog a cookie. As we reached the neighbour’s house, the dog neared the fence. I gave the small black dog a cookie. The dog was happy. I was happy. A lady opened the door when she saw us.

“Don’t feed my dog you fucking hindus, next time I will call the cops” she yelled across the yard.

My brother grabbed my hand and ran me home. I didn’t know why. I was 3 years old.

It was a beautiful day, after school, I was riding my bike around the block with my brother and cousins. As we decided to call it a day and headed home, we cut through an empty city lot. As we got off our bikes to walk them through the fence, two older boys came in with their bikes.

the Decrepit (spoken word narration)

I want this message to be the needle that pricks your skin for the very last time
I want these words to be the puff of smoke that makes you so very high
People don’t seem to understand, that it is not a certain type of man, woman, or child that lines these streets
It is everyone, it is you, it is me.
This is not the bane of a select few, regardless of what you believe.
These are not pariahs.
And the cops are certainly not martyrs.
It is society who has dropped that proverbial ball.
It is society who has failed us above all.
Don’t walk past these people,
As I have seen you walk past with your noses to sky and your fingers pointing down to the tired and tried.

‘It has been long argued that men are not created equal’

It has been long argued that men are not created equal. And without a callous notion in my being, I assert this to be true. If to be equal, was the fact that all men have the same intelligence, the same moral values, the same capacity for good, and sometimes for evil, then I would agree that all men are equal. But this notion, above all else, is a fallacy. Men are not equal, nor were they created equal. And now the reader must think of me as a prejudice, unfair, hate-mongering, and racist individual. But I assure you I am not.

To be equal, is to be identical, and to be identical, is the lack of humanity and the lack of human capacity.

‘Fish Tank’ Review

'Fish Tank' on IMDb

Anytime you have Michael Fassbender in a film, chances are that film is going to be good (except for X-Men: First Class…Michael, don’t sell out, keep doing your independent thing!). Rarely does another actor steal the film from him, but that case is true in Fish Tank, where an amazing debut performance by Katie Jarvis, who portrays a troubled teen named ‘Mia’ trying to find her place in an all too typical family situation of neglect.

Her performance was full of subtle emotion, so much so that I believe she has the talent to be a top film actress. Here is hoping she sticks to well written independent flicks. She is easily on my top 10 list of actors/actresses I would love to work with.

Michael Fassbender did a great job as ‘Connor’ in the film. His role took a back seat to a newbie, but I am glad he did, most top actors in his position would only take on starring roles. Another reason why he remains an awesome actor.

Fish Tank is one of those films anyone who has been a teen, can relate to. ‘Coming of age’ stories are a dime a dozen these days, if you can weed through the crap, you can still find gems like this one.

Time to add Katie Jarvis on Twitter, she is worth following.

For hitting the reset button on the age old ‘coming of age’ story, I rate this film 8/10

‘I crawled through the dusk’

I crawled through the dusk only to find my hand untouched
Lacking embrace that found a better man
I will never forget that Sun
That shouted our names when we couldn’t see one another
I will never forget that hurt that was washed away
With One’s joyous cries.

I seem unhinged to the ideals of the past
Believing in something in myself
That took many young lives
Now I shout their stories to make things right
People forget such hurt and let it wash away
As they watch these events with desensitized eyes…

I remember the beautiful news
As children had begun to voice their views
And people began to listen…
So Sun is given a chance to rest, as the Moon begins to glow…
And so tomorrow, no more lives are taken
As the reflections in our tears are of happiness.
